While this may seem small, in years past, the idea of a manga being this upfront about its queer themes would be unheard of, with most stories having to focus on an additional narrative. This is doubly true when you consider that the manga is published by Square Enix, meaning that not only is this an upfront queer narrative, but it's also an upfront queer narrative distributed by a major publisher.

Plus, the manga approaches its queer themes in a very grounded way. In years past, queer narratives were often hidden away or relegated to subtext. Writers were forced to use over-the-top or fantastical scenarios or set their stories in alternative realities to get these themes included without censorship. However, I Think Our Son Is Gay is a slice-of-life series set in modern Japan , following a regular family that does things we're all familiar with.

Because writers can discuss these themes openly without having to put a fictionalized sheen on them. It should be noted that the manga's use of queer narratives serves a second purpose.
